Speakup broken with kernel 3.4.x (ArchLinux users please read)

Is spinlock the thing that causes all the speakup command keys to
crash and lock up the computer? If so, I sure hope people get this
moving. This is a major show stopper and serious impact and could
really discourage new blind users to come over and try Linux. I'm
very lucky that most of the laptop based speakup commands still work
but try toggling the caps lock key sometime. Computer locks up every
time. I'm on the newest kernel in Arch - 3.5.something.
