If flushing all your Iptables rules allows you to successfully SSH to your boxes, more than likely your traffic is being dropped somewhere; you will have to read through your ruleset, to determine exactly where traffic is dropping, and under what matches. Another thing you can try on either end of the connection, is to run tcpdump to see if traffic is being sent/received on their respective interfaces. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with OpenWRT (assuming that's what you are using) firewall implementation to tell you exactly where to look. Hth at least a bit though.
