I seem to recall that you have slackware 10.0. I haven't yet had time to upgrade any of my machines from slackware 9.1, but what I'm about to describe should hold for slack 10 as well. In your /etc/X11/xinit directory, you should have a softlink called xinitrc. By default, this is linked to xinitrc.kde, which is in the same directory. If this is the case, delete your current xinitrc softlink, and create a new xinitrc softlink, but link it to xinitrc.gnome, which again is in the same directory. Give it a try, and hth.
