-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 You'll hear a beep from your pc speaker once gdm is ready for you to login. Keep in mind though that if you're starting x from a text console using startx, you'll be bypassing gdm, because you're already logged in. It all depends on how you want to start x. You can either use startx from the shell prompt in a text console, if you feel brave, you can change your default run level, so that your distro boots directly into x and gdm, or you can do what I like to do, which is to use telinit as root to switch manually to the default run level for x. What I like about the third method is that I can still be in text mode by default when the box boots, but if I want to use x, I can start with a fresh login session, as if my box had booted directly into x and gdm.
