For example man mknod would give you the mknod manual page. As for learning about using the system in general, I found the documentation at http://www.tldp.org to be helpful. I also seem to recall that debian's site has a wealth of documentation specific to debian, though I didn't look at that much, since debian was not my first distro, and I already new in general what I was dealing with.
