Actually, I'm not sure if untaring a copy of the modules is such a good idea. Kernel modules are dependent on one another so that if you build a different kernel, you may not get working modules, or you may get tons of unresolved symbols. It is possible to compile for just the sound card you are using, so that may save you some time in the future.
