I got the problem solved. I just had to be a litte more patient upon bootup. (I got smart and viewed dmesg.) I also switched serial ports, that seemed to speed it up a little. One thing I do know is that the client will want it to talk faster. Thanks for all the help!! Actually since this is a Red Hat machine you can use the kernel rpm packages that have speakup enabled in them from: http://198.172.228.165/rh7.1/RedHat/RPMS All you have to add to the lilo command line is append = "speakup_synth=ltlk" Hopefully this should work. If not try adding the speakup_ser=0 option to the line as well.
