The modem chip might be hosted by on the subsystem 17aa:20f2

The scanModem diagnostics might not detect a Conexant chip.
To check this possibility, from
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
get and try to install the hsfmodem_7.80.02.06full_i386.deb.zip.  Under Linux
$ unzip hsf*.zip
$ sudo dpkg -i hsf*.deb
There is an included diagnostic package.
Report back what the output is.
