Re: issue installing modem

Hi,

if you can issue the "hsfconfig" command in a root shell, then a driver package is installed, you should follow the instructions given by that command to complete the installation and the configuration of the driver.

If the "hsfconfig" script is not present on your system and the installer doesn't work properly for your setup, you can always try to manually install a driver package from:

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php

Manual installation instructions are available at:

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/install.php

Bill,

Maybe the automatic installer saw a conflict with slmodem?

The modem symbolic link is /dev/modem -> ttySL0

and did not install anything?

If an error occurred during installation, please see the sections
'BUGS' and 'REPORTING PROBLEMS' below.

Once the modem is installed and configured, you may access it as
/dev/ttySHSF0. Additionally, you can use it via the symbolic link
/dev/modem (equivalent to ttySHSF0). If you have more than one HSF
modem, the second will be available as /dev/ttySHSF1, the third as
/dev/ttySHSF2 and so forth.

Please review the permissions on the device nodes with "ls -l" to
ensure that they are adequate for your system.

The "hsfconfig" command can be used to change certain modem
configuration options or recompile (generic packages only) the kernel
modules after installation. Run "hsfconfig --help" for usage
information.

Thanks for your time and effort.

I am not aware there is a driver installed?

I used the installer
(http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads-installer.php)

I didn't realize it had installed a driver because at the end it gives
me and error (no generic driver)

How do I check which driver it installed?

What else do I need in order to use the modem for faxing?

Thanks again,
Bill

Bill,

You have installed a driver, may I ask which one?

Did you install the generic one:

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/archive/hsfmodem-7.80.02.06full/hsfmodem_7.80.02.06full_i386.deb.zip?

this one would not work, since your machine is 64 bit::

CPU=x86_64,  Ubuntu ,  ALSA_version=1.0.23

There are no generic packages (debian/ubuntu) for 64 bit systems,
maybe get the tar.gz
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/archive/hsfmodem-7.80.02.06x86_64full/hsfmodem-7.80.02.06x86_64full.tar.gz

Another one?

The modem is served by hsfmodem software:

For owners of a Dell PCs with Conexant HSF modems, a driver source
package with full speed enabled is available, but requires driver
compiling. Read DOCs/Conexant.txt

Modem support packages from Linuxant include resources for compiling drivers.
If an installer package matching your kernel_version is not provided,
just install a generic code package.

 From  http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-ubuntu-x86.php
 download hsfmodem-7.80.02.05full_k2.6.32_28_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip
 Under Linux unpack with:
 $ unzip hsfmodem*.zip
 Then install with:
 $ sudo dpkg -i hsfmodem*.deb
 Subsequently, the modem should be found with
 $ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
 Edit in your personal information with:
 $ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
 and try dialing out with:
 $ sudo wvdial.
 See DOCs/Testing.txt  for details.

Hi:
First, thanks for your time and effort.

I have tried the installer and get an error after it says the
installation is successful. The error says I don't have the headers
installed and when I check it shows I do?

I have tried to compile the driver but lack the knowledge to achieve this.

Is there anyway I can install the driver in order to use the modem for faxing?

Once again, thanks for your time and effort.

I have attached the datamodem.txt file
