I apologize for the slowness of my responses lately. I have been
waiting for PCLinux to release a more current kernel to the ones that we
have been discussing. Now, they have the 2.6.32 kernel and I have
upgraded the problem machine to that kernel and have been re-attempting
to get this Agere 11c1:0630 modem working.
I started off with what I believe is the most recent driver
(agrsm06pci-2.1.80-20100106) and executed the following commands from
the usr/src directory

Vaguely I recall that the fix for this error was included in one of
the past upgrades.
Evidently we did not maintain backward compartibility to 2.6.26
kernels in doing so.
If the prior variant of agrsm06pci-2.1.80 is not serving under 2.6.26
kernels is not doing so either,
it is simplest just to upgrade to a 2.6.28 kernel+header resources.
I just checked that the agrsm06pci-2.1.80~20100106/ code compiles under 2.6.28

I know Marvin/Nickolay suggested that I would probably need to upgrade to a
2.6.28 kernel, but I thought with sharing these results someone could
confirm that need or whether there is something else I could try to get this
driver to work with my current 2.6.26 kernel.

The reason I say that is based on the following:
The following sequence of make commands could be used to successfully
'compile' and 'install':
(1) make clean
(2) make
(3) make install
Notes:
The 'make clean' command is use to remove the files (the rm commands -
remove/delete commands) created from a previous compile attempt. In
other words, it prepares or cleans the compile directory for the next
compile attempt.
The 'make' command does the actual compiling. Hopefully; it's
successful, and you do not receive an error. Warnings are okay in
compiling, but an error means you did not successfully compile (make)
the modem driver module files (e.g., create the agrmodem.ko and
agrserial.ko modem driver module files).
The 'make install' command actually installs the compiled results (e.g.,
copies the newly created modem module driver agrmodem.ko and
agrserial.ko files,) to the required location (a directory) on the
system. The 'make install' command does other necessary actions to the
system for the install; e.g., creates a directory, etc.
Also, if (2) is unsuccessful, then there is no sense in doing (3).
I hope the above explanations on the commands used for compiling and
installing clarifies things for you somewhat.

I believe that message about "struct_uart_info" is the same that I got
with
an earlier attempt at this.
The make install failed. I also tried the wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
and
that failed with a message about not being able to detect the modem.
I am not sure where this leaves the situation.

if the agrsm06pci-2.1.80-20090825 folder is not in /usr/src/ ,
move

If all successful
# agrsm-test
When you upgade to a new kernel, the dksm will automatically
compile
the matching kernels.

So, I am confused. I cannot install the dkms without a modem

install the modem driver without dkms. To top it off, it
appears
that
dkms
is already installed.
Is there a source for dkms that I can download from another
mashine?

can
try to reinstall dkms from that, if you think it would help.

Upon a reboot the modem will be set up by:

sudo
agrsm-test rescued me. The modem was found on
/dev/ttySAGR.
While
trying
to configure the network tools point to point
connection
interface
I
lost
the connection and it appears the file
/dev/ttySAGR
was
lost
but
sudo
agrsm-test brought it right back. I then had to
reenter
my
name,
phone
and
PW but it all went pretty smoothly. My hat is off
to
you
and
the
others
who
