Very likely poor phone line quality. Are you located in a major city or
in some remote place, possibly an island?
The solution would be to reduce the speed of the line and/or the
protocole used. Please try a setting which will give slow line rate but
is intended to see if speed is or not the reason for the connection
breaks. Add the following to you initialization string in /etc/wvdial.conf :
+MS=11,1,14400

What do you mean by "the whole system"? programs unrelated to
communications started to work much slower when you are not using wvdial?
MOSTLY I AM REFERRING TO CHANGES BETWEEN WINDOWS, "TRACES" LEFT
BEHIND, THE RESPONSE TO ALT-TAB etc. OPENOFFICE WORKS NORMALLY
is it a good thing to disconnect with Ctrl-C?
It is not a bad thing at all, CTRL-C is done for that purpose. And yes
of course like in anything done with a computer there are other ways,
from identifying the process number for wvdial for example with a
command ps ax | grep wvdial and then kill the process with
command kill number, to cutting off the power in your home if your
computer does not run on batteries ....

why does the nice user-friendly gnome-ppp not work?
2-Here again, how can anybody know why gnome-ppp does not work if you do
not submiit the question with a detailed report of what you do step by
step to try to make it work and what the diagnostics are ?

more questions:
1) i want to install stuff through the synaptic, but nothing i type
(vlc, kwrite, inkscape, greek for openoffice) in the search is to be
found. what am i doing wrong? what do i have to change in the
synaptics?
2) i cannot see the internet activity (neither in the applet nor on
the system monitor; it says "0bytes received, 0bytes sent" even though
i know the connection is on heavy duty.
3) after the update i have two "types" of 2.6.31 plus my 2.6.28-16
(that i installed in order for the slamr to function). Do i need all
of them to appear at the grub menu? how do i change the order of the
boot?
i hope i am more analytic this time concerning my questions
