Please read the Post Install Howto at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/
Most likely you will have to work out improvemenst by yourself
I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING SIMILAR TO "POST INSTALL HOW TO" IN THERE...

Please open the page
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

Please make the effort to begin to read the list of contents, until item #12 which says Driver installed, connection does not start? click! <http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/post-install.html>
and just CLICK

Also install the package apt-zip and read its documentation:
Homepage: http://alioth.debian.org/projects/apt-zip
IT SEEMS TO NOT BE THERE (CHECK ATTACHED FOTOS)
Perhaps you want to read this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=46282
Note: Fortunately, I am not using Ubuntu.
1-the connection keeps falling on its own.

Very likely poor phone line quality. Are you located in a major city or
in some remote place, possibly an island?
The solution would be to reduce the speed of the line and/or the
protocole used. Please try a setting which will give slow line rate but
is intended to see if speed is or not the reason for the connection
breaks. Add the following to you initialization string in /etc/wvdial.conf :
+MS=11,1,14400
IT WAS DISCONNECTING DURING THE EVENING, BUT DURING THE NIGHT IT
MANAGED TO DOWNLOAD ALL THE UPDATES [EITHER IT NEVER DISCONNECTED OR
THE { Auto Reconnect to "on" } HELPED]; IF IT DISCONNECTS AGAIN I WILL
TRY THIS.

the whole system goes soooo much slower.

What do you mean by "the whole system"? programs unrelated to
communications started to work much slower when you are not using wvdial?
MOSTLY I AM REFERRING TO CHANGES BETWEEN WINDOWS, "TRACES" LEFT
BEHIND, THE RESPONSE TO ALT-TAB etc. OPENOFFICE WORKS NORMALLY
Ok but does this happen all the time after starting the modem driver before starting wvdial, or only when the modem is receiving/transmitting with wvdial running?

is it a good thing to disconnect with Ctrl-C?

It is not a bad thing at all, CTRL-C is done for that purpose. And yes
of course like in anything done with a computer there are other ways,
from identifying the process number for wvdial for example with a
command ps ax | grep wvdial and then kill the process with
command kill number, to cutting off the power in your home if your
computer does not run on batteries ....
OK

why does the nice user-friendly gnome-ppp not work?
2-Here again, how can anybody know why gnome-ppp does not work if you do
not submiit the question with a detailed report of what you do step by
step to try to make it work and what the diagnostics are ?

Your gnome-ppp is not initialized.
Gnome-ppp uses wvdial, and it has not executed at least ONCE the wvdialconf part of wvdial. The parameters now correctly initialized for stand-alone wwdial (command line, not via gnome-ppp) in file /etc/wvdial.conf are not correctly set in the
equivalent file

/home/pedeli/.wvdial.conf

To set them correctly you must tell gnome-ppp to do it. Do not ask ME how as I find it easier to just type wvdialconf on a command line than to search and discover how gnome-ppp does it.

more questions:
1) i want to install stuff through the synaptic, but nothing i type
(vlc, kwrite, inkscape, greek for openoffice) in the search is to be
found. what am i doing wrong? what do i have to change in the
synaptics?
This is an Ubuntu question, I am not competent. I do not use Ubuntu but Scientific Linux derived from RedHa ***AND I KNOW WHY***.
2) i cannot see the internet activity (neither in the applet nor on
the system monitor; it says "0bytes received, 0bytes sent" even though
i know the connection is on heavy duty.
This is again an Ubuntu gadget
3) after the update i have two "types" of 2.6.31 plus my 2.6.28-16
(that i installed in order for the slamr to function). Do i need all
of them to appear at the grub menu? how do i change the order of the
boot?
A block of definitions for one kernel in the GRUB menu can be made invisible using a # symbol at the beginning of EACH line of the block. Example:
#title Scientific Linux CERN SLC (2.6.9-89.0.11.EL.cern) None
# root (hd0,7)
# kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-89.0.11.EL.cern ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet netprofile=none
# initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-89.0.11.EL.cern.img
title eXtraPain
       rootnoverify (hd0,1)
      chainloader +1
In this example an old Linux kernel is hidden but the "Windows X.P." section is visible

The order of appearance is the order of the sections in the file.
If I wanted Windows eXtraPain first I would copy the block (starts with title, until next title with that next title line NOT INCLUDED) BEFORE the FIRST title. Now before you ask how to make for example the THIRD title the default, the answer is, change default to 2 because 2 is the THIRD integer number when you start counting from zero.

Note, please, that discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx is not the place for such modem-unrelated questions, AND that the command man grub writes in great detail the answers to your questions. So does man for every Linux command.

i hope i am more analytic this time concerning my questions

thanks
basilis
Jacques
