The modem is working good with gnome-ppp as well, so this will be great for my neighbor because she is not saavy with the command line yet! One more minor annoyance is that Firefox seems to think it's "offline" when using a ppp connection. It's easy enough to click File and uncheck "Offline Mode"... but this can be more permantely avoided in future iterations by navigating the Firefox > about:config > then set browser.offline-apps.notify to false. Finally, I notice the driver unloads after reboot, so I added modprobe pctel to the /etc/init.d/rc.local script. Thanks again for all your help... this is working great now!
