Ash,

The simplest initial route is to shut down, detach all USB devices and reboot,

and see if there is more modem info.  You can just
$  cat /proc/asound/pcm
it there is a Modem line in the output.  If so proceed with the modem
testing.  If not

Create a file:
$ sudo gedit  /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local
with  lines:
blacklist ehci-hcd
# end blacklist

Save and reboot.
The lower speed USB ports will still work.
Check that the blacklisting work with:
$ lsmod | grep ehci
the ehci-hcd should not be shown.
