1)  Of most importance, check if there is a file
    /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/mc97#1-1+reg

If so, send me the complete output of:
cat   /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/mc97#1-1+regs

2) RE: $ sudo ./slmodemd -a -c BRAZIL hw:0
hw:0  is merely the audio compondent of the card. It will not support COMM.
$ sudo ./slmodemd -a -c BRAZIL hw:0,1
would use the modem Subsystem if present

3)  version 2.9.9e-pre1  is NOT competent for COMM with current kernels.

get the SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz  and use the slmodemd therein of version 2.9.11

I'll do a bugfix for ALI5451 interrogation tonight
