PLEASE use wvdial until your modem works.
See, for example, http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/wvdial.html
Once for all sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
Edit file /etc/wvdial.conf as in the URL above.
DO add the line
Carrier Check = no
Then try to connect:
sudo wvdial

If fails, send console output of wvdialconf and of wvdial
REMEMBER: slmodemd MUST be running or it will not work.
Do NOT hit CTRL-C to stop slmodemd.

Hi,
I just executed slmodemd and got the following message, which seems to indicate that there were no errors:

sudo slmodemd -c GERMANY --alsa hw:0,6
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug  6 2007 22:02:27
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/2' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/2'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

Then I used pppconfig for creating a connection using /dev/ttySL0 as the modem device.

But when I want to connect, I get this:

pon [provider]
/usr/sbin/pppd: In file /etc/ppp/peers/[provider]: unrecognized option '/dev/ttySL0'

What did i do wrong or forget?

This is really a bit hard for me to understand, since I am not so experienced with it.
So it would be nice if someone could help me.

Yes,

Just follow the instructions.
After you have
$ sudo cp -a  slmodemd   /usr/sbin/slmodemd
Then the following should work

$    sudo slmodemd -c USA  --alsa hw:0,6
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
      /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
 Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.

 Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack
under Linux with:
       $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein.
Okay, just to be clear about this:

1. Download SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
2. Unpack
3. Read instructions

Right?

Thanks so far!
