Re: Walter Jungwirth, Germany - modem acer extensa 5220

Walter,
You should try to use your modem while running your system in 32 bits mode.
You have installed the correct hsf driver.

Finally, to debug, you should better directly use wvdial than any more user friendly GUI to start your modem session. When wvdialconf will recognize your modem, your connection will work, but in 32 bits mode only.

Please always write to discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx , not to me: several experts read you there, myself included (if considered an expert).

Hallo Jacques,

Thank you for your anwer, I did not expect one so quickly!
I just took my driver from the linuxant.com - Download page,
corresponding to the kernel I use, and it seems that you are right, that
there is probably no driver available for my machine. Anyhow, I unpacked
it and installed it with yast - no problem, no warning or something like
that. I configured the modem with yast (indicated still as unknown) tried as
root with "ifdown eth0" and "ifup modem0", started kinternet without any
result. But still I am not sure if my modem is a Conexant HSF modem, given my
problems to understand the text.

To know what kind of modem I have would be the first step, right?

Do you have any idea what to do further - I have a network connection at
home, but not everywhere where I would like to use my notebook.

Thank you very much!
Walter

Herrn Walter,

You say: I tried to install an Conexant HSF driver without result
Could you please say which result you expected, and what you did, step by step, to try to achieve it?

Let me say why I ask.
I cannot guess WHICH driver is "an Conexant HSF driver". Which driver file? Taken from where? The right place to take an HSF driver is http://www.linuxant.com/drivers, via "Download" in the "HSF" menu.
In the table of distributions, for your Suse 10.3 Linux distribution,
only i386 , not X86_64, is supported.

Please understand that we cannot guess what you have done or not.

There are no blacklisted modem drivers in /etc/modprobe* files
The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) packages providing audio
support on your System, also includes drivers for some modems. Diagnostics are under
the /proc/asound/ folders.

For modems using the snd-hda-intel audio+modem driver, upgrades to a new ALSA version are sometimes necessary to achieve function. See for example:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-seventh/msg02144.html.
Audio cards with the ALC883 chipset may require an upgrade to ALSA
version 1.0.15 for modem support, see

Support can likely be achieved through two mutually exclusive
alternatives:
1) The hsfmodem software for Conexant chipset modems: Read Conexant.txt
The following ALSA alternative CANNOT work with Conexant modems.

2) An ALSA modem driver plus slmodemd. Read Smartlink.txt for details,

The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev

The kernel was compiled with gcc version 4.2.1 and a compiler is not
installed

linux-headers-2.6.22.5-31-default resources needed for compiling are
not manifestly ready!

If compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
	gcc-4.2 kernel-source-2.6.22.5-31-default

If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some
FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include.
The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev

If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$  apt-get update
$  apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed pacakage
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to
display the needed package list:

Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com
Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,
they can be installed alltogether with:
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see:

To enable dialout without Root permission do:

or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
	 chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
