The message below was sent out a couple of weeks ago. I have heard nothing back from you. Since then, I managed to get your Scanmodem software to work within Knoppix and managed to print out a scan report. It is 98 pages long and I don't know how to save it outside of Linux (this was mentioned below). Are there specific parts of the report that are more important to you than others? Perhaps I could scan those pages into a PDF file and send them to you. The entire file would be quite large and hard to send via email. I hope you will be able to resolve these difficulties. Cleve Baker, Jr. ORIGINAL MESSAGE Good day, I am running a Gateway MT6705 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. Owing to internet connectivity problems, I have been attempting to install Knoppix 4.0 (the kernel is 2.6.12) via a Live CD but I am unable to make the internal 56K modem work. After configuration, the program indicates that the modem is busy, which it is not. I visited your web site and downloaded Scanmodem.gz but I can't get Knoppix to locate the file in order to unzip it. I tried using an external floppy drive attached via USB 2 but it says there's no floppy in the drive, which there is - with the scanmodem file. I only have one CD ROM drive and can't copy the file to the Live CD since it's not my property; of note, a copy of this CD fails to boot. So, I can't even get beyond the scanning and identification phase of this process. The Windows Device Manager says I have a Motorola SM56 Data FAX modem with an Internal High Definition Audio Bus. The Hardware ID is HDAUDIO/Func_02&VEN_1057&Dev_3057&SUBSYS_0001000&REV_1001. The driver version is 6.12.6.0. A User Guide says the UbiSurf SM56modem is available for PCI platforms - no mention of PCMCIA or ISA. Of note, the PCITree program would not run. The chipset used is not provided. In looking through the various recommended web sites I can't find a SM56 driver for kernel 2.6.12. My request to you for help is twofold: 1. Can you help with the file location problem I'm having? 2. Do you know of a driver which will enable my modem to work with the Knoppix Live CD? I am hesitant to partition my hard drive to install a Linux distribution owing to its destructive potential. I would appreciate whatever assistance you can provide. Please let me know if I can provide additional information. I am new to Linux but I'll do what I can to help. Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Cleve Baker, Jr.
