Cleve,

The Listserver only forwards plain text email. Likely your earlier
messages were sent in HTML format and were rejected:

The modem on
 HDAUDIO/Func_02&VEN_1057&Dev_3057&SUBSYS_0001000&REV_1001
is supported. Under Knoppix just do:
$ cat /proc/asound/pcm
to display the hardware (hw) address of the modem.
Most likely it will be 0,6.
In this case your setup command will be:
$ ./slmodem -c USA  --alsa hw:0,6

>From http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/  one of the
SLMODEMD.gcc??.tar.gz best matching the output of
$ gcc --version
like you need the 4.0 or 4.1 variant, the 3rd place doesn't matter
Copy the package into your Knoppix home/ folder. Therein unpack
$ tar zxf SLMODEMD*.tar.gz
cd into the unpacked folder and Browse around.

Low level modem support is included in snd-hda-intel which should have
autoloaded. But most of the COMM function is provided by slmodemd. Do
$ su root (or similar)
# ./slmodem -c USA  --alsa hw:0,6
should announce port creation. Leave slmodmed running .

Open another console
# su root
# wvdialconf   cbconf
will write a default config file cbtest if all is OK.
# gedit cbconf
delete the ; and replace the <xxxx> placeholders with your dialout info.
Add a line:
 Carrier  Check  =  no
and Save.
Copy the cbconf to a USB stick, or whatever you are using for file transfer.
Then in principle, you should be able to dialout with:
# wvdial --config cbconf

HOWEVER. If your IP is aol.com you have additional problems.
