Dave,
"a message about sound drivers" : which message?
And, are you trying to start dialling at boot time?
When things go wrong, they should be handled one at a time.
In the days when your Mandrake version was fashionable, KDE had a
strange "feature", completely resetting the sound system. I however do
not see how this can possibly couple for the modem; it used to hit AC'97
modems but yours in an HSF.
I also remember a nightmare trying to make an HCF (not identical to HSF,
other driver) work with that distribution and kernel.
Is there a good reason for you to use MDK 10.1?

which shows that you are using Linux Mandrake with kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk
and in your internal modem a chipset 127a:2014 which is a Conexant
HSF modem.
For that modem and kernel Linuxant does not have an off the shelf ready
to go installer.
The file to be downloaded is hsfmodem-7.60.00.09full-1.i386.rpm.zip
which you reach from http://www.linuxant.com/drivers , then look at the

Hi
I installed the above rpm; there were no problems except a message
about sound drivers, however on reboot into mandrake kde desktop I no
longer have sound (eg no sound when kde starts), I still get the
"Failed" message about ppp0 not activated during boot and there is no
longer a mouse (not even a mouse pointer is on the screen).
Is there any useful info I can provide at this stage?
