Dave, "failed to activate ppp0 with error 8". ONLY occurs as a result of a dialout attempt, and not a simple hardware check. Open your Control Center under mandrake 2.6.8.1-12mdk and disable Dialout upon Bootup. The drivers supplied with your modem are ONLY for a single kernel verison and likely do NOT match your 2.6.8.1-12mdk kernel!!! Check with: $ lsmod | grep hsf If a list of several hsf drivers is not returned, supporting drivers are NOT loaded. Likely your System is trying to use a serial port only cogent to older Controller Chipset modems. On http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-mdk-x86.php there are hsfmodem-7.60.00.09full_k2.6.8.1_10mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm.zip and hsfmodem-7.60.00.09full_k2.6.8.1_26mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm.zip Neither of which will serve your 2.6.8.1-12mdk installation, though If you can upgrade to a kernel 2.6.8.1_26mdk, then that driver package would serve. Or you could setup for compiling, compile and install drivers matching 2.6.8.1-12mdk MarvS On 5/28/07, daveches@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx <daveches@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:

If so, please can you tell me where the package hsfmodem_VersionSpec_k2.6.8.1_12mdk_ubuntu_i386.rpm.zip is; I couldn't see it on the linuxant downloads page: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php > > The first functional test you should try is: > $ su - root > # wvdialconf wvtest > to assess if your modem is detected. will try when I get home. > > "man pppd" relates that error > 8 The connect script failed (returned a non-zero exit status) > ------- > but which dialer were you trying to use? > wvdial is recommended at least for testing purposes. > I wasn't trying any dialer: the message came up as part of the linux boot process as the various hardware checks were happening, thanks dave
