1-Your modem is fully hardware, no specific driver neeeded.
It is supported by the standard Linux serial driver.
Please use wvdial (http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/wvdial.html), it will
detect your modem and allow connection.
it has good debugging messages.
When the connection will work you may prefer to use kppp or the like.
Re your question about eth:
When data is sent to a network the computer needs to know where to send
it to, in particular the first computer which will transmit further.
Using the Ethernet (eth) route and the modem (ppp) route at the same
time is not possible. Also the remote computers which know how to
convert symbolic addresses to numeric and vice versa are usually not the
same.
So, to you use your modem, you just need to STOP your Ethernet link if
you have one active. You do that with the Network configuration tool
located somewhere with other system settings.
Of course, if you have no Ethernet link active, not to say no Ethernet
card, you need not worry about this issue.
