If an eth0 channel is open,
the System will try to use the DNS appropriate to eth0, and that will fail.
That is my other COMM channels should be closed before a dialout session,
even if the other channels are not effectively connected.

I think you mean, the default route will be set for the network bound to the eth0 channel therefore ping will fail even for an IP address that is valid.

You should have an email where I explained how I got it to function satisfactorily, which did include taking down all the other interfaces. I will look into it some more presently.

I will also look into the compilation problems some more. There ought to be some way of modifying the Makefile so it _always_ looks in the correct place for header information and thereby avoid having to make changes to the base Slackware installation /usr/include tree.

PS a fix for problem of running `scanModem' on Slackware 11 should be appearing in the very near future in the form of different version of bash, so anyone who cares check the relevant changelog on slackware.org.

Too much belief and the prowling belief-systems will pick
your bones clean. Too little and we look for the nearest high
building to cast ourselves from, if only because we have scoured
ourselves clean of all transcendental possibilities.
