Then there's something hokey with the compile that on linking it looks at the wrong things - I shouldn't have to symlink to make it work.

You may need to add to /etc/ppp/options  a line
usepeerdns

I'll look into it again tomorrow (it's midnight now. I was trying to ping the DNS server by its reported IP address, so it wouldn't matter what was in resolve.conf anyway.
