Hi Jacques, Sorry for the confusion, I'm new to this form of discussion. Should I be CC'ing my replys to the board? Anyway, several days ago I had Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 kernel > 2.4.27-3-386 installed on a computer that I am setting up for my mother. MarvS tried to help me get the modem working but ended up reccomending that I install Ubuntu so now I have Ubuntu 6.10, 2.6.17-10-generic installed on the same computer. MarvS sent me the following instructions (should I follow these?): -------------from MarvS--------- RJ The package bypasses the need to setup for compiling again. The included sl-modem-daemon-Version.deb file has setup automation scripts It was hunted up through http://packages.ubuntu.com/ which likely you will want to use in the future With the attached under Linux, unpack with $ tar zxf slamr*.tar.gz Move in $ cd slamr-2.6.17-10-generic Look around $ ls Do the $ sudo ./setup and follow the output instructions. When rebooting, modem setup should be automatic, You should be able to dialout with $ sudo wvdial Check back if you have problems MarvS --- Jacques Goldberg <Jacques.Goldberg@xxxxxxx> wrote: > RJ > > I do not have a compatible modem, thus I can do no > more than compile, > which is anyway where you are stuck now. > My laptop is still running kernel > 2.4.21-47.EL.cern , a locally > customized version of RedHat Enterprise Linux > version 3, from which all > non GNU free material has been removed.
