I believe it is simply the human condition. :)

Which probably means we need something other than jabber, or else need to spend a lot of money building better tools.

Meetecho already has the jabber support; that money was already spent.

I don’t know if we paid them for that or they did it for free, but the sunk cost fallacy obviously applies here… :)
