You might want to read how these tests work.  There are two types - one looks for the genome and the other antibodies:

It can take up to a week for antibodies to develop.  So, you'd need to add a step that includes a quarantine period after you've been out and about.   And, as with any tests, they are not 100% accurate, so a false negative is always possible.

    The goal is containment of a virus that has been indirectly causing
    death of many people, and that is spreading very fast.

    I wouldn't call that "irrational and indiscriminate", but YMMV.
