This is indeed the core of the problem. And perhaps we need to think
about how it can be addressed in other ways.

For years we've had a good list for Security, so I am very disappointed to see no one up except the incumbent..  I do see value in going through the process even if you are not selected so that the NomCom has a choice and if anything were to happen to either incumbent (new position that didn't support them, lottery, etc.), there would be a place to start.  It's up to the incumbents to invite others to put their names int he hat and that works quite well..  I did nominate a few people when I saw there was no one there, but the incumbents for all positions really should be reaching out individually and discussing the pro/cons, offering to talk to management, etc.

In terms of benefits, one is having the opportunity to see the work across the IETF.  I found this quite helpful to be able to take a step back and think about the work happening across areas and what the impact of that would be collectively.  It's a really interesting exercise and could be beneficial to your organization when you step back into your role with this expanded view and knowledge.  I'm almost done writing a book from these observations.  Benoit also published just after stepping down and it helped him get promoted to the next level in Cisco as he clearly demonstrated technical leadership across industry in one of his areas of expertise.  Alia moved on to a new type of role for her as she gained management experience and it provided an opportunity to move in a new direction.  There are benefits to the individual and to the organization, but you have to think about what that might be and how you will go about it.  This is helpful when justifying the time that will be spent in the position.
