For example, an increasing number of 2nd rank academic conferences essentially charge page fees for accepted papers (with conference attendance thrown in as a side benefit). How would people like it if the IETF charged page fees for I-Ds? Frankly I don't see any alternative to this increase. It's noise compared to increases in hotel bills and air fares. Brian
