I have a general point and then a couple of my own stories to tell.
The general point is that you should NOT read too much into this. Tech
support or sales on any consumer service is very dumb. Most often they
do not even understand their own current business, let alone new
features or trends. As an example, in cellular data networking the
concept of an APN (Access Point Name) is crucial to the operation of the
networks and the user configurations. A few years ago I had some
connectivity trouble and called the operator's help desk to see if I had
the right APN. I had to progress FOUR LEVELS through their technical
support layers before I even got someone who understood the term APN.
And this was for something about their current networks. Had I asked
about rolling out (N+1)G I probably would have had to go through even
more levels.
And then to my other story. Its a happy IPv6 story, I think. As a test
case, I called my ISP this morning. For background, my previous ISP
merged with this ISP last week. I'm talking to their first level support
guy.
Me: Can you enable IPv6 for my ADSL?
Agent: We do have that service. Can I get your address?
Me: <my address>
Agent: You are one of the customers moved from the other ISP last week
Me: Yes
Agent: I would normally just turn IPv6 for you here, but for these
accounts its not possible yet.
Agent: You can get the IPv6 service but let us call you back after some
investigation. You may need to change your account type.
Me: Ok
(The ISP is Nebula, by the way, http://www.nebula.fi. Other people have
had good IPv6 experience with them.)
