There will be very technically astute people involved in the IETF who don't want to serve as AD for any number of reasons (have other life-consuming things to do; don't want to deal with the "politics", etc.). And I haven't seen sufficient attention paid in this thread to the difference between breadth vs. depth in both knowledge and skill.
