For what it is worth, I prefer "on path attacker". It is factual, and it avoids personalizing the attacker. In most cases, that attacker will in fact be some kind of program or robot, not an actual person let alone an animal. Just don't call them OPA. Only grandfathers should be called that.

Initially we changed ‘man-in-the-middle attacker’ to ‘on-path attacker’. Tim proposed to use ‘meddler-in-the-middle’ to keep the abbreviation MITM. There were also other proposalsmade.
I am no native speaker. I am happy to update to whatever people think is most appropriate.

Hello,

what's about a gender neutral name? "Mandy" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandy_(name)) would be close to "Man".

I just talked to Tim Hollebeek.
He proposed to change 'man-in-the-middle' to 'meddler-in-the-middle' to stay with the abbreviation MITM.

<tp>
One of our ADs always used to use 'Monkey in the Middle' which seemed suitably asexual,

Hi,

Two counterpoints. First, "man-in-the-middle" is a term of the art.
It does not lend itself to word swapping. I don't think it is wise
to invent new terms for a well established term.

the IETF has agreement to use the guidance in NIST.IR.8366. The
proposed rewording is aligned with Section 4.1 of NIST.IR.8366.

Thanks,
Lars
