It does support extensions that can be announced and might provide
privacy or security enhancements. But these are not part of SMTP, per se.

I looked up what printers do [1] and I ended up with STD 72. RFC
8314 updated RFC 6409 (STD 72) and it discussed "cleartext".
For what it is worth, a Standard takes precedence over an
Applicability Statement.
