You can get away with it if you're a UK or Irish citizen, but it falls
firmly into "getting away with it" territory. Raising border official
eyebrows is generally considered to be a poor idea when rocking up at
some country's immigration control.
IE->UK travel generally ends you up in domestic arrivals in the UK where
there are no checks at all, but it's advisable not to depend on this.
Best bring your passport and be very boring about it all.
