I think that the moderators got this right - I don't see how calling people stupid is either necessary or in any way helpful to IETF's goals or helps foster a community. Note, this is absolutely not about trying to stifle debate or criticism, I don't see anyone objecting to the community publicly criticising the IESG or decisions that the IESG has made, but it is much better if that feedback can be framed in a constructive way.
