Kids generally aren't concerned about a number of issues that are important to IETF - such as privacy or multi-platform compatibility or global reach or scalability to hundreds of people in the same conversation or reliability against loss of any messages.
But I agree that having to arrange for a jabber account and configure a client are a pain.
