Now, that's curious.  It isn't supposed to change like that.  Thinkpad-acpi is not supposed to be handling brightness control in that laptop in the first place, but still it should not be issuing different messages.

Can you send me the full "thinkpad-acpi" kernel logs for 3.16.0-34 and 3.16.0-36-generic ?  Also, the kernel config (should be in /boot/config-*)?
