According to the spec, the standard way to control this is through the _BCL, _BCM, and _BQC methods on the LCD device. None of these methods is implemented in my T60. However, there is code present to send the 0x86 and 0x87 notifications to the LCD device when the hotkeys are pressed. I'm not sure why they bother sending these notifications when the brightness control methods aren't implemented.
