Do you use the failover feature? Maybe try to disable it.
Can you generate a debug trc 5 log for a sample failing call?

By doing only an mv /sbin/gnugk_2.2.3 /sbin/running_gnugk , the problem
dissapeared..
Nothing else changed (the config remained the same)
