When saving an image to png takes 5 or 10 minutes, I certainly don't want it happening when I didn't ask for it... especially as I might not have 300 megabytes (the approx size of the last image I saved with gimp) of available space. People who work with images for pre-press and print generally have larger files than people working on facebook avatars :-) and need more control.
