So there's either a Btrfs or a separate /var problem with fedup. After consolidating this to something more conventional: root on Btrfs and /boot on ext4, five attempts at upgrade failed with coredumps and then inexplicably trying one of the earlier attempt commands from history, worked. And the upgrade mostly succeeded. After rebooting however, both a yum update and dnf upgrade show a bunch of needed updates, but there's breakage and neither will proceed. I also tried dnf with --best, and dnf with --skip-broken but it fails the same way.
