When I use computer, no one else can launch these dedicated apps to view pictures. In fact no one specifically wants to view pictures in most cases. But if someone happens to be in the room when I'm not using the computer, they do enjoy watching these pictures. Generally, screensavers were part of computing experience for a long time (15 years at least). People developed tons of different screensavers -- ranging from some chaotic graphics to cartoon characters and even to displaying porn pictures, and many people used and in some cases paid for these screensavers. I remember screensaver pack for Win 3.1 featuring Itchy & Scratchy that were throwing Program Manager icons at each other. People did it not because one graphics or another saved their screen better or did anything useful, but because they enjoyed this.
