There is no careful way to do it. It is not safe, it is not predictable,
it is not reproducable.

those claims up with some concrete examples
Been there, done that. Echo'ing what spot said, don't.
One concrete example: chroot'd buildroots (like mock).
The rpm version used to create the buildroot (oftentimes) != rpm version
used inside the root for the query, leads to wierd behavior, failures.
