And, no, a vt switch does *not* imply a mode switch. The resync delay, yes. If there is a mode switch, then that'll take time. However, just plain vt switch _does_ paint the whole screen. If you're trying to crossfade from plymouth to gdm, then you want to not clear to black before starting X, which means you can't change vt. - ajax
