In the past, xfig had exposed quite a couple of compatibility issues between Xaw3d and Xaw, but ... ... it's been a while since then and xfig and Xaw3d both might have been improved ... I don't know. So, IMHO, somebody better should check if these "other distros" have Xaw3D related patches applied to Xaw3D and/or xfig. IIRC, in the past at least SuSE had.
