I think that is a quite pointless "differentiation criteria". Most users do not even understand the difference between an "Edition" and a "Spin" or "Lab". And technically, there is none. I do not see how Fedora's success has anything to do with such an implementation detail. All this differentiation achieves is creating first-class ("Edition") and second-class ("Spin" or "Lab") spins, for no benefit whatsoever.
