Thanks Simon, TIL that I can log into Matrix with my FAS account.
I'm also glad to know that it's not yet smooth, so I will continue to use Element with my less elegant Matrix ID.

Your workaround seems to work, with enough retries I am eventually able to get
into the larger rooms.
