I think you and Neal talk about two different things. The BTRFS proponents claim that the subvolume technology allows you to have flexible partitioning, so that you can dynamically create whatever partition layout is appropriate for your situation. Nobody is claiming that desktop partition scheme ('model') should be forced onto servers.
