From my standpoint, the answer to this is around tooling to built/test/audit NodeJS applications with bundled dependencies.  Easier said than done, unfortunately :-/  

I've gone ahead and taken mocha (running tests will be useful
regardless of whether or not we start bundling NPM modules). I haven't
yet figured out what I need to take to keep it + my other node
packages alive for now, but I'll work through that this evening if no
one suggests doing anything else.

Thank you!  I'm happy to help where I can, but can't quite guarantee right now that I have the time to be the primary maintainer of the mocha package.  That being said, if you get stuck, feel free to ping me on IRC or drop me an email, and I'll try to help.
