If you install fedora-motd, it'll update /etc/motd with pending update
info when you log in over ssh. And, while it's not really documented as
such, just running `motdgen` will give you output like:

 09:22:04 up 11 days, 22:13,  1 user,  load average: 0.03, 0.12, 0.22
Updates Information Summary: available
    2 Security notice(s)
    1 Bugfix notice(s)
    4 Enhancement notice(s)

This is a fairly new thing and could use input and further development.
